Ecology & Sustainability

ECOLOGY & SUSTAINABILITY

We take looking after our environment very seriously and to this end we have made sure that The Barn is well insulated to modern specifications, has some triple glazing and some double glazing and has dual flush toilet cisterns. We ask guests to indicate when they need fresh towels rather than changing and washing them more regularly than required.

Toiletries provided in bedrooms are free from parabens, phthalates, petrol derived ingredients, or propylene glycol. They do contain natural conditioning agents from honey and brassicas instead of petrochemicals and also contain organic ingredients . They are not tested on animals and their containers are recycled. A portion of the net profits from these toiletries goes to support honey bee and sustainable pollination research.

A proportion of products used to clean The Barn are eco friendly.

Heating for bedrooms is via electric condenser units as well as by electric radiators . The condenser units are extremely energy efficient – being A** energy rated.

Underlay to carpets is made from recycled soft furnishings.

Most of the food we provide travels few air miles or none at all – as much food as possible is locally sourced – some from within the village itself and is organic wherever possible. We donate foods both from shop and the Barn to a local street kitchen (please Facebook ‘Pontefract Street Kitchen’). Also certain foods can be utilised in either the shop or the Barn to minimise food wastage.

All cardboard and paper packaging on foods and other products used is recycled, as are plastics and glass.

In 2018 we joined the East Leeds Rural Refill project and offer customers to both shop and Barn free drinking water refills to their own bottles – to save on plastic and glass usage.

Our ecology plans for 2020 are to investigate the usefulness of installing electric car recharge points for customers to the Barn.
